George Glenn Jones (September 12, 1931 – April 26, 2013) was a singer and songwriter from the United States.
He rose to international prominence as a result of his long list of hit singles, including his best-known song “He Stopped Loving Her Today,” as well as his distinctive voice and phrasing. Jones was frequently referred to as the greatest living country singer in the last two decades of his life. “For the two or three minutes consumed by a song, Jones immerses himself so completely in its lyrics, and in the mood it conveys, that the listener can scarcely avoid becoming similarly involved,” writes Bill Malone, a country music scholar. Jones was dubbed “The Possum” due to the shape of his nose and facial features.
Jones had his first Billboard country chart number one in 1959 with “White Lightnin’,” which had a more authentic rock and roll sound than his half-hearted rockabilly cuts. Johnny Cash insisted in the Same Ole Me retrospective, “If George Jones had approached rockabilly from that angle, he would have been a really hot rockabilly artist. He was, in fact, but he was never given credit for it.” J. P. Richardson, better known as the Big Bopper, wrote “White Lightnin'”. Jones admitted in I Lived To Tell It All that he arrived at the recording session under the influence of alcohol and that it took him about 80 takes just to record his vocals.
