Energy Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has come under fire from private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu for his recent comments on the ongoing power outages in Ghana.
According to Kpebu, the Minister’s remarks show a lack of concern for the feelings of ordinary Ghanaians who are experiencing the effects of the frequent blackouts, known locally as ‘Dumsor’.
During a session with the Government Assurances Committee, Dr. Opoku Prempeh claimed that Ghana is currently in an era of ‘dum sie sie’, which he insisted is different from the well-known ‘Dumsor’. He also took a swipe at former President John Mahama for the power outages that occurred during his tenure.
Criticism of the Energy Minister’s statements has been growing as Ghanaians continue to grapple with electricity supply challenges. Human rights lawyer Martin Kpebu expressed his disapproval of Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s comments, highlighting the impact of the outages on his own daily life.
Kpebu recounted instances where he had to work from his car due to power cuts in his neighborhood, emphasizing the stressful nature of the situation. He called for the Minister to show more empathy towards the suffering of the people and to refrain from making insensitive statements.
Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo has assured workers that the era of power outages has been effectively dealt with following maintenance work on faulty transformers of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). The President expressed confidence that the country will not experience a return to the days of ‘dumsor’, citing stable power supply across the nation.
As Ghanaians continue to voice their concerns over the ongoing power outages, the government faces mounting pressure to address the issue and provide lasting solutions for reliable electricity supply.
