The Ghanaian government is taking proactive measures to address the ongoing drought crisis and ensure food security in the country.

Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong recently announced the construction of a 60,000-tonne grain silo, a strategic reserve that will help stabilize food supplies during future climate challenges. This initiative, costing nearly $70 million, is expected to be completed within 12 months.

In addition to the grain silo project, the government is implementing the Ghana Agriculture and Agribusiness Platform, which will provide critical farming instructions to farmers nationwide through voice notes in local languages.

Minister Acheampong emphasized the importance of effective communication with farmers to ensure they understand and comply with farming practices aligned with climatic conditions.

The Minister also highlighted the success of the government’s “One District, One Dam” initiative, which helped mitigate the impact of last year’s drought.

The construction of small earth dams in various districts contributed to lower maize prices and stabilized the market, benefiting farmers across the country.

Furthermore, the government is committed to expanding irrigation infrastructure, developing more land, and integrating crop calendars with weather data to align farming seasons with climatic conditions.

These efforts are part of the broader Food Systems Resilience Program funded by the World Bank, aiming to create a sustainable agricultural sector in Ghana.

Minister Acheampong assured Ghanaians that despite the current dry spell, the government is prepared to avert future challenges and protect the country’s food systems.

With a focus on food security and resilience, Ghana is taking proactive steps to ensure a stable and sustainable agricultural sector in the face of climate change.
