Veteran recording engineer and music producer, Zapp
Mallet has expressed his disapproval at some music producers for producing
beats for artistes without any charge. According to him, the practice does not
augur well for the industry. He made this expression in a phone interview on
Hitz 103.9 FM’s flagship showbiz program,
Daybreak Hitz.

“Some of them are spreading their vocation for free
and I think it doesn’t augur well for the industry. It is a problem for the
industry. It doesn’t make money go round. The artiste will take the beat, ride
on it, make a hit, and at the end of the day, he makes all the money,”
He said.
When asked to consider the view that producers who
make beats for free may be doing so for exposure and not necessarily for
monetary gains, he stated the following;

“If you want to do your things for free, go ahead
and do it, And if you think you are going to benefit from it then praise the
Lord. From my position, I don’t think it will work.”
Expressing his doubts about the sustainability of
the practice of making productions for artistes for free, Zapp Mallet asserted
that if such producers start charging for their works, there is a likelihood of
artistes parting ways with them to patronize the services of other producers
who may be producing for free. This is the development he opines would put some
producers in a dire condition.
