In a tragic turn of events, five people lost their lives when a boat capsized on the Volta Lake while conveying mourners from Azizanya to Azizakpe on March 18th, 2023 Saturday morning.
According to eyewitness accounts, the boat was carrying about 100 passengers, including three children below the age of three and two women who sadly lost their lives in the incident.
Reports suggest that the accident was caused by strong winds, and all passengers on board were without life jackets. Rescue efforts are currently underway to find other survivors, with a search party made up of the Navy, NADMO, and a community rescue team combing the waters for any signs of life.
The police have also detained the owner of the boat for further investigations. This latest tragedy is reminiscent of a similar incident nearly a decade ago that resulted in the death of popular musician Castro and has left the community in mourning.
Reliable sources also claim in January, eight school children also lost their lives when a boat transporting them to school capsized on the Volta Lake.
