34-year-old man arrested for distribution of pornographic materials with faces of high-ranking officials

In an intriguing incident, the  South African Police have been able to apprehend a young man in connection with the distribution of pornographic materials which had high-profile personalities’ faces on them. 

Some of the featured faces included President Cyril Ramaphosa and Police Minister Bheki Cele.

The accused, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, was tracked down and arrested in the eastern city of Pietermaritzburg on Sunday, May 21, 2023.

The explicit images, which rapidly circulated on various social media platforms and reached police officers’ attention, sparked a nationwide outburst.

The South African police swiftly launched a thorough investigation to identify the perpetrator behind this audacious act of defamation against the nation’s leaders.

Working diligently, law enforcement agencies traced the suspect’s location using advanced cyber surveillance techniques. With substantial evidence in hand, they swiftly closed in on the suspect’s residence, where he was taken into custody without incident.

Alongside the arrest, authorities seized electronic devices and multiple SIM cards believed to have been used in the distribution of the illicit material.

The accused, now facing charges under the Cyber Crimes Act, is scheduled to appear before a court in Pretoria on Tuesday, May 23, 2023. If found guilty, he could face severe penalties, including imprisonment, fines, or both, as prescribed by the Act.
