Two Youth Organizers, Jude Balma of the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP) and Mark Ewusi Arkoh of the People’s National Convention (PNC), have taken action to ensure transparency in the upcoming limited voter registration exercise in Ghana.
In a petition submitted to the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC), the two demanded that serial numbers be provided on all biometric voter registration (BVR) kits to be used during the exercise next month.
They also requested information on the number of BVR kits to be deployed at each registration center.
Operating under the umbrella institution Election Watch Ghana, Balma and Arkoh have not yet received a response from the EC regarding their demands. As a result, they reached out to the EC’s international partners for assistance.
The two activists wrote to the First Secretary in charge of Elections at the British High Commission, expressing their concerns about the lack of response from the EC.
They emphasized the importance of transparency and fairness in the electoral process, citing the release of serial numbers to members of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) since 2001 as a precedent.
Expressing their fears of potential election rigging, Balma and Arkoh stated, “The lack of transparency in providing serial numbers for the BVR kits casts a shadow on the upcoming elections.” They called on the British High Commission to intervene and ensure that the EC addresses their concerns.
