The Catholic Diocese of Keta Akatsi, in collaboration with the Richard Novati Catholic Hospital, recently hosted a crucial meeting for the Parkinson’s Support Group to address the challenges faced by individuals battling Parkinson’s disease.
Led by Dr Momodou Cham, a Public Health Physician specializing in Parkinson’s care, the gathering highlighted the struggles of group members, particularly in accessing medications covered by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
During the meeting, Dr Cham expressed concern over the lack of coverage for essential Parkinson’s medications under the NHIS, putting a financial strain on patients and their families.
Currently, medications are being provided free of charge through support from the University of Newcastle and the National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR).
Parkinson’s disease, a progressive nervous system disorder, presents symptoms such as tremors, stiffness, and impaired balance, requiring a combination of medication, therapy, and lifestyle adjustments.
The support group meeting emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to raise awareness, advocate for policy reforms, and improve access to vital medications for Parkinson’s patients.
Participants shared their experiences and coping mechanisms, fostering a sense of community and mutual support.
Dr Cham emphasized the importance of continued collaboration between healthcare providers, policymakers, and community stakeholders to address the challenges faced by individuals with Parkinson’s disease.
Patients appealed to relevant authorities and the government to provide urgent assistance in managing Parkinson’s disease effectively and enhancing their quality of life.
The Catholic Diocese of Keta Akatsi and the Richard Novati Catholic Hospital remain committed to supporting the community through initiatives like the Parkinson’s Support Group meeting, demonstrating their dedication to promoting health and well-being for all members, especially those dealing with chronic illnesses.
