Sherri who was 34 years at the time reappeared 3-weeks later on Thanksgiving Day, November 24. This happened after it was reported that her kidnappers had liberated her at 4:30 that morning.
She was found while in restraints, on the side of County Road 17 around Interstate 5 in Yolo County, 150 miles (240 km) south of where she got missing.
National law enforcement authorities reported doubts and were oppositely puzzled as to the unlikely circumstances and inconsistencies of the reported kidnapping. The case attracted much media attention.
Sherri was arrested on March 3, 2022, on charges of making false statements to federal law enforcement officers and mail fraud. It was found that Sherri falsified the story of her kidnapping.
She had been living with her ex-boyfriend during the time of her kidnap. She also hurt herself to give evidence of her false depiction.
The charges carry penalties of up to five years in federal prison for lying to a federal law enforcement officer. She may also face up to 20 years for mail fraud but it is not clear what punishment she will face.
