August 8, 2022, marked a very sad day in the lives of Olivia John-Newton’s family and fans all over the world.

News of her passing has been widely reported in the media. She was 73.

Was Olivia Newton-John on Eurovision Song Contest?

The late actress actually was a contestant in the Eurovision contest.

Her single ‘Let Me Be There’ debuted at No. 6 in the United States (where she won a Grammy Award for best country female vocal performance) and No. 11 in Australia in 1973.

The song was co-produced by John Farrar, a fellow Australian who was a member of the British band ‘The Shadows’ (who also competed at Eurovision in 1975).

It was at this juncture of her career that she was selected to compete for the UK in the Eurovision song contest.

She competed in a ‘national final’ to select her entry. Six songs were performed on Jimmy Saville’s show ‘Clunk, Clink’; this was supposed to happen on Cilla Black’s show, but the host felt awkward promoting another female singer.

At the Eurovision contest, she managed to deliver strong performance and finished a credible fourth on the night.

She described the experience as “terrifying and dreadful” because she didn’t like the ABBA song “Waterloo,” which the audience chose.
