The Food and Drugs Authority has issued a warning to the public about two brands of contaminated eye drops on the market, ‘Ezricare Artificial Tears’ and ‘Delsam Pharma’s Artificial Tears’ owned by Global Pharma.
Per their findings, the products contain the drug-resistant bacteria pseudomonas aeruginosa, which has been linked to three deaths and vision loss in eight patients. The FDA has urged individuals who have used the contaminated products and are experiencing symptoms to seek professional healthcare.
The manufacturer, Global Pharma has also issued a voluntary recall of the products, and the US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (USCDC) has classified the incident as an outbreak. The FDA has advised individuals in possession of the recalled products to immediately stop using them and submit them to any of the FDA offices nationwide.
The FDA’s caution comes amidst growing concern about the safety of consumer products, with regulators increasingly calling on companies to take responsibility for ensuring the safety of their products. The contaminated eye drops highlight the need for greater oversight of pharmaceutical manufacturing and distribution, and for consumers to be more vigilant when choosing products.
As the FDA continues to investigate the incident, it is calling on healthcare professionals to report any cases of adverse effects associated with the use of the recalled products. The FDA’s warning serves as a reminder that consumers must remain vigilant and informed when choosing and using healthcare products, and that regulators must continue to enforce safety standards to protect public health.
