ECG plans large-scale disconnection campaign to recover GH¢5bn in outstanding debt

Starting on Monday, March 20, 2023, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) will launch a massive disconnection exercise to recover revenue owed to them.

The company had previously disconnected the Ministry of Energy, which left the facility in darkness for almost half a day until power was restored after the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) was paid in full.

Many Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) and State Owned Enterprises (SOEs) also owe ECG significant amounts of money, leading to the company’s decision to embark on a revenue mobilization exercise between Monday 20th March 2023 to Thursday 20th April 2023.

The company aims to retrieve all the money owed to them using all their staff members, including top management and junior officers.

The Managing Director of ECG, Mr. Samuel Dubik Mahama Esq., stated that the company is owed over GH¢5.5 billion from September 2022 to February 2023, with most of the debt residing with the SOEs and MDAs.

Therefore, the strategy is to take these agencies by storm, and those who refuse to settle their bill immediately will be disconnected, just like the Ministry of Energy.

To prepare for the exercise, Mr. Dubik Mahama visited all the operational regions of ECG to train staff on revenue mobilization and customer service. He emphasized that ECG is a business, not a charity, and staff members must act accordingly.
