His father, José Teles Veloso lived from 1901to1983 while his mother who died in 2012 was born in 1907. Both parents were Brazilian natives.

As he grew up, the bossa nova musical style and Joo Gilberto were important influences on Veloso’s music career.

When Veloso first heard Gilberto, whom he refers to as his “supreme master,” he was 17 years old. He sees Gilberto’s contribution to Brazilian music as one in a million, revealing the past and opening the way for future creativity.

Veloso relocated from So Paulo to Belo Horizonte in 1964, when he won a lyrics contest for his work Um Dia and was signed to Philips Records.

On October 21, 1967, he took fourth place and received a standing ovation at the third annual Brazil Popular Music Festival for his song Alegria, Alegria, which was supported by the Beat Boys. This was the first time rock bands performed at the Rio de Janeiro festival.
