Bernard Joseph Cribbins was an English actor, voice artist, and singer. Bernard’s career span was almost eight decades. During the 1960s, Cribbins became known in the UK for his successful novelty records including The Hole in the Ground and Right Said Fred.
Over a career spanning 75 years and counting, he’s become one of the best-known and most-loved faces in showbusiness. Bernard was the voice of many childhoods, thanks to Jackanory and The Wombles.
Cribbins became an actor in his early teens as a member of a local repertory company. By the time he was in his twenties he was established in London, appearing regularly on the stage.

Bernard Cribbins parents: John Edward Cribbins, Ethel Clarkson
Bernard’s parents were Ethel Clarkson and World War I veteran John Edward Cribbins born in 1896. Ethel who was born in the year 1898, died in the year 1989. Ethel was believed to be a very talented cotton weaver.
Edward and Ethel had three children who they brought up together in poverty. Bernard described his father as the “jack of all trade, master of none,” whom he said dabbled in acting as well. Due to the difficulty in the family, Benard became a school dropout at the age of 13, and work in a theatre club as an assistant stage manager, and later took up acting roles.
