Rakim Athelaston Mayers was born on October 3, 1988, in Manhattan, New York City’s district of Harlem. His father is originally from Barbados. Erika, his older sister, and an older brother (all deceased). Rakim and Erica are both named after the Eric B. & Rakim combo. ASAP Nast, another ASAP Mob member, is his cousin.

Mayers began rapping when he was nine years old and relocated to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. His older brother, who also rocked the Cornrows hairstyle that A$AP Rocky subsequently adopted, taught him how to rap. Mayers’ father was arrested for drug trafficking when he was 12 years old, and he died in 2012. Mayers’ brother was murdered in Harlem when he was 13 years old. Rocky became more serious about rapping when his father died. Mayers grew up idolizing The Diplomats, a Harlem-based rap group. Mobb Deep, Three 6 Mafia, UGK, Run DMC, Wu-Tang Clan, and Bone Thugs-n-Harmony were also influences on him. A$AP Rocky spent his adolescence traveling between homeless shelters with his mother and sister. He moved to Midtown Manhattan after spending time in a shelter with his mother in New York City.
