Your Story Matters: The crucial shift towards personalisation and empathy in Ghana’s financial sector

The banking sector in Ghana plays a crucial role in the economic development of the country, influencing the flow of finance and opportunities within our society.

At Absa Bank Ghana, we have embarked on a transformational journey with our new brand promise, “Your Story Matters”. This promise signifies our commitment to offering a more personalized and empathetic banking experience to our customers, viewing them as partners with unique narratives that have the power to shape the world.

Traditionally, banks have been seen as cold and indifferent institutions that focus primarily on the risks associated with customers, rather than recognizing the potential within their individual stories. This perception has hindered genuine customer engagement. To address this, we have been working diligently to instill the right culture internally, aiming to shift this narrative and better serve the needs of our customers.

Our conversations with thousands of customers and stakeholders led us to introduce a new corporate purpose in early 2023: to ‘Empower Africa’s tomorrow, together, one story at a time’. This paved the way for our bold brand promise – Your Story Matters, reflecting our dedication to a human-centered approach that builds partnerships and enhances the customer experience.

Digital innovation is key in making this shift towards personalized banking tangible. We have enhanced our digital platforms to offer services such as withdrawing cash from ATMs via QR code, purchasing financial instruments online, and even onboarding digitally. By leveraging these technologies, we are revolutionizing the way we bank, providing services that resonate with the unique needs and aspirations of our customers.

Our commitment to empowering personal stories is further illustrated through our support for SMEs, with a special focus on women, young entrepreneurs, and Agribusinesses. In 2023, we provided over GHC 400 million in loans to SMEs, with a significant portion going to women-led enterprises. Through initiatives like ReadytoWork in collaboration with the Mastercard Foundation, we are equipping the youth with essential skills for the evolving job market.

Sustainability is also a core focus for us, as reflected in our investments in solar power solutions, waste segregation practices, and green financing. We have made significant progress in reducing energy usage, water consumption, and increasing renewable energy sources, underscoring our commitment to environmental stewardship.

As we advocate for a new era of banking that values the individual stories of our customers, we invite all Ghanaians to join us on this journey. “Your Story Matters” encapsulates our vision for the future of banking in Ghana – one where every customer feels acknowledged, understood, and appreciated.’

We are setting a new standard for banking, one that not only manages finances but also nurtures the dreams and aspirations of our community.
