Prof. Afua Hesse, a surgery professor at the University of Ghana Medical School (UGMS), has urged medical professionals to adhere to the greatest ethical standards in their field.
Professor Hesse emphasized how important it is for medical professionals to treat all patients with compassion, regardless of their circumstances.
The UGMS’s first female pediatric surgery professor urged medical staff to put patients’ needs first and deliver high-quality care regularly.
“Do not look at the appearance or the pocket size of your patients before deciding on how you behave or treat them.
“Many have treated or mistreated angels without knowing those who will bless you daily by praying for you are those who have nothing but whom you esteemed and made them feel special from your first encounter,” she said.
In an address to the University of Ghana’s College of Health Sciences graduating class of 2024, Prof. Hesse urged medical personnel to put patients’ needs ahead of their financial interests.
The graduates were advised by Mrs. Hesse not to let money be their main reason for becoming doctors. She maintained that assisting patients and improving their lives is the true joy of medicine and that the chase of money might be ephemeral and misguided.
