The Irish government is taking steps to address the issue of asylum seekers entering the country from the UK.

Taoiseach Simon Harris has tasked Ireland’s justice minister, Helen McEntee, with proposing legislation to allow for the return of asylum seekers to the UK.

It has been revealed that 80% of recent arrivals in Ireland have come from the UK, crossing the Irish border. This influx of migrants has prompted the government to consider implementing measures to deter such movements.

The UK’s Rwanda policy, which aims to send some asylum seekers to Rwanda as a deterrent, has already had an impact on Ireland. Legislation to revive this policy was passed recently, but no migrants have been sent from the UK yet.

Minister McEntee has emphasized the need for an effective immigration system in Ireland and is pushing for legislation to facilitate the return of asylum seekers to the UK. She will also be meeting with the UK Home Secretary to discuss these issues further.

The issue of irregular movement within the Common Travel Area between Britain and Ireland will be a key topic of discussion at the upcoming ministerial meeting.

The rise in people crossing the land border between Northern Ireland and the Republic has raised concerns about the impact of the UK’s Rwanda policy.

While the UK government aims to reduce net migration and implement a more restrictive system, the Irish government is focused on managing the influx of asylum seekers and ensuring an efficient immigration structure.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has acknowledged the global challenge of illegal migration and emphasized the need for deterrent measures.

As both countries grapple with the complexities of migration, it remains to be seen how the proposed legislation and policies will shape the future of asylum seekers in the region.
