Former President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to make significant changes to the Free SHS policy if he is elected as President in the upcoming elections.
As part of his vision to improve the policy, Mahama has promised to cancel the supply of food items to Senior High Schools by the National Food Buffer Stock Company.
Speaking during his Building Ghana Tour in the North East Region, Mahama explained that feeding grants will now be given directly to the heads of Senior High Schools. This will allow the headmasters to procure food items for the students, rather than relying on the National Buffer Stock Company.
Mahama emphasized the importance of decentralizing the procurement of food for Senior High Schools. He believes that by allowing the headmasters to purchase food from local farmers in the area, the students will have access to a more nutritious diet. This, in turn, will improve the overall quality of the Free SHS program.
“We are going to make Free SHS better by decentralizing the cooking and procurement of food for the students,” Mahama stated. “Feeding grants will no longer go to the National Buffer Stock Company, but directly to the schools. This way, headmasters can use the money to buy nutritious food for the children.”
If elected, Mahama’s proposed changes to the Free SHS policy could have a significant impact on the quality of education and the well-being of students in Senior High Schools across the country. Voters will have the opportunity to decide on these proposed changes in the upcoming elections.
