The Ghana Mineworkers’ Union (GMWU) of the TUC-Ghana has decided to postpone its planned picketing at the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and Parliament House to the 25th and 26th of April, 2024.
Originally scheduled for April 15-18, the picketing was rescheduled following a meeting with the Accra Regional Police Command on April 9, 2024.
In a press release dated April 14, 2024, the General Secretary of the Union explained that the modification was made after the Accra Regional Police Command indicated that they did not have enough personnel available to support the demonstration on the initial dates.
The GMWU expressed concern over the delay in taking action to revoke the mining lease of Future Global Resources Bogoso-Prestea mine during a news conference on April 8, 2024. The Attorney-General & Minister of Justice has confirmed the recommendation of the Mineral’s Commission to revoke the mining lease, but the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has been slow to act on the matter.
The Union is calling on authorities to stop stalling and take decisive action to revoke the mining lease of Future Global Resources Bogoso-Prestea mine. They believe that the company lacks the capacity to keep the mine operational and urgent steps need to be taken to prevent further hardships on the more than 1000 members and their families who are affected by the non-operation of the mine.
The GMWU’s picketing is intended to draw attention to the situation and urge swift action to revamp operations at the mine. They emphasize the need for immediate intervention to prevent the situation from deteriorating further.
