The Member of Parliament (MP) for the North Tongu constituency, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has declared that a class action suit against the government is in the works on behalf of the victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage.

The lawmaker expressed disappointment in the government’s neglect of the victims and emphasized the need for full compensation for those affected by the disaster.

Despite efforts to seek government assistance for the thousands of people impacted by the spillage, including the provision of new homes and support for those who lost property, little action has been taken.

Ablakwa highlighted that the victims feel abandoned and disregarded eight months after the incident, emphasizing the necessity for compensation for their losses.

In an interview on Joy FM, the Ranking Member of the Foreign Affairs Committee of Parliament emphasized that legal action is being considered to hold the government accountable for its role in the man-made disaster.

Ablakwa stressed the need for the government to fulfill its responsibility and provide relief to the victims through compensation.

Ablakwa also criticized the lack of transparency in the government’s utilization of the GH¢80 million allocated for the rehabilitation of the affected communities.

He expressed dismay at the government’s slow response and nonchalant attitude towards the plight of the victims, pointing out that thousands are still living in tents and are unable to return to their livelihoods.

Furthermore, Ablakwa condemned the government for prioritizing new projects in the Ejisu constituency ahead of addressing the needs of the flood victims.

He highlighted the struggles of farmers who have lost their livelihoods due to the spillage and emphasized the urgency of providing support to those affected by the disaster.

As discussions with lawyers progress, Ablakwa remains steadfast in advocating for justice and support for the victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage, underscoring the importance of holding the government accountable for its neglect of the affected communities.
