With the kind of hardship and governance in the country now many have resorted to trooping out of the country for greener pastures. However, the cost involved in acquiring a passport now would blow your mind.
In a shocking revelation, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Shirley Ayorkor Botchway, has expressed her dismay at the rampant corruption within the Passport Office.
This comes after her recent visit to the Passport Office on August 14, 2023, where she witnessed the distressing challenges faced by passport applicants due to the misconduct of certain staff members.
During a press interaction following her visit, Minister Ayorkor Botchway vehemently criticized the exorbitant cost of passport acquisition.
She deemed it unacceptable that Ghanaian citizens are being charged over GH¢3000 for obtaining a passport. This financial burden has triggered widespread public concern.
The Minister has taken immediate action to address the situation. She has ordered security personnel who have overstayed their assignments at the Passport Office to cease reporting for duty starting August 21, 2023.
This directive aims to uphold the standard practice that no agency should retain staff members for more than a year.
In her determined effort to curb corruption, Minister Ayorkor Botchway has initiated a comprehensive investigation into the matter. She expressed confidence that the leads being pursued will soon yield concrete information.
Those found culpable will face legal consequences as a deterrent for future misconduct.
