The “Joliet” Jake and Elwood Blues act, which included Belushi and Aykroyd, always alternated between comedy and song.

On the one hand, the two comedians’ 1976 SNL appearance, where they donned bee costumes and sang Slim Harpo’s “I’m a King Bee,” is where the brothers got their start.

Aykroyd, on the other hand, had a lifelong passion for blues and R&B that was fervent, verging on obsessive, not to mention contagious. His friend caught his enthusiasm and started stockpiling blues LPs.

Belushi and Aykroyd made their official debut on the sketch show on April 22, 1978, accompanied by the program’s band. SNL music director Howard Shore proposed that they call themselves the Blues Brothers.

However, when the guys decided to tour that summer, they wanted to perform with a group that was even more rooted in blues and soul.
