President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has taken action on the petition for the removal of Kissi Agyebeng as Special Prosecutor by referring it to the Chief Justice for further review. The Chief Justice is currently assessing whether there is enough evidence to establish a committee for Mr. Agyebeng’s removal as mandated by Article 146 of the Constitution.
The petition was initiated by Mr. Agyebeng’s predecessor, Martin Amidu, who cited procurement breaches in the purchase of vehicles for the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) and alleged abuses involving judges and the administration of justice as reasons for Mr. Agyebeng’s impeachment.
Amidu also accused Mr. Agyebeng of violations of citizens’ rights through arrests and detentions, as well as improper appointments of personnel to the office. Another claim made by Amidu was the violation of the right to information when he requested appointment letters and salary details of all OSP staff, which Mr. Agyebeng allegedly refused to provide.
The petition, which was confirmed by Kissi Agyebeng, is dated April 30, 2024. Mr. Amidu’s grounds for petitioning President Akufo-Addo rely on Section 15(2)-(6) of the OSP Act (Act 959).
It is now in the hands of the Chief Justice to determine the next steps in this process, which could have significant implications for Kissi Agyebeng’s tenure as Special Prosecutor. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
