The Minister of Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, is making strides towards fulfilling the government’s promise of fast-tracking the Pokuase Affordable Housing Project.

In a recent announcement, he revealed that the Ministry has initiated bi-weekly site meetings with contractors and consultants to ensure the project stays on track.

These meetings play a crucial role in resolving any bottlenecks that may arise during the construction process. By holding all parties involved accountable for their responsibilities, the Ministry can address challenges promptly and keep the project moving forward. During a recent visit to the site, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah observed progress on drains, sewerage, and roads within the enclave.

Once completed, the Pokuase project is set to deliver 8,000 affordable housing units, which will significantly contribute to reducing Ghana’s housing deficit. The Minister expressed his optimism for the project’s success on his X platform, highlighting the importance of these regular site meetings in ensuring the project’s timely completion.

This initiative is part of the Revised National Affordable Housing Programme, which was launched by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in August 2023. The programme, known as “My Home, My Peace,” aims to provide subsidized housing units with land and infrastructure support to reduce construction costs. The private sector will also play a role in raising funds to build apartments on a cost-recovery basis.

The Pokuase project is divided into two phases, with the first phase set to be completed within 18 months, followed by the second phase of 4,000 units. The government’s commitment to the affordable housing programme includes providing land, infrastructure such as roads and utilities, and mortgage subsidies to support homebuyers.

Additionally, the programme has an approved Master Plan that extends beyond Pokuase to include neighboring communities. Facilities such as sports fields, tennis courts, swimming pools, and children’s playgrounds will be available to serve the surrounding areas, making this a holistic and community-focused initiative.

Looking ahead, the government plans to construct a further 6,000 housing units in Dedesua, in the Ashanti Region, following thorough feasibility studies. President Akufo-Addo emphasized the meticulous assessment process that these projects undergo, including environmental and social impact studies, to ensure their success.

Overall, the government’s commitment to addressing the housing deficit in Ghana through initiatives like the Pokuase Affordable Housing Project demonstrates a proactive approach towards providing quality affordable housing for its citizens. The regular site meetings led by Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah are just one example of the government’s dedication to seeing these projects through to completion.
