Vicky Phelan

Vicky Phelan, an Irish healthcare advocate best known for her work on the CervicalCheck cancer scandal, died on November 14, 2022. She was born on October 28, 1974.

Phelan lived for four more years despite being told she had less than a year to live in 2018. Pembrolizumab, which reduced her tumor and prolonged her life, was made available to her after she successfully fought for access to it.

Who is Vicky Phelan?

Phelan was born Victoria Kelly on October 28, 1974, in Mooncoin, County Kilkenny, to parents Gaby and John, and she spent her formative years there.  After enrolling at the University of Limerick (UL), she earned a BA in European Studies. She had two children from her marriage to Jim Phelan.

Phelan was hurt in an automobile accident in France during the 1990s. Three people died as a result of the collision, while another person suffered paralysis. Phelan managed to live but was seriously injured and spent ten days in a coma. Later, she claimed that it had given her insight into a different type of healthcare system, which would be useful in other situations.

Vicky Phelan is best known for the raw statement she made in April 2018 on the steps of the Four Courts, in which she exposed one of the greatest political and medical scandals of our time.
