Why did Ramsay Bolton rape Sansa Stark in front of Theon Greyjoy in ‘Game of Thrones’?

During Sunday night’s Game of Thrones episode, Sansa Stark was raped for no apparent reason.

In order to reclaim her house and wreak revenge on her murdered mother and brother, the true heir to Winterfell married Roose Bolton’s bastard son. In the minutes leading up to the wedding, Sansa is all self-assured sass and agency.

She puts Ramsay’s devious girlfriend, Myranda, in her place and says: “I’m Sansa Stark of Winterfell. This is my home and you can’t frighten me.” Then she strides into the godswood, where she exchanges vows with a man she wants to destroy, making her a real player in the Game of Thrones for the first time.

However, the newlyweds’ wedding night concludes with a scene that goes in the opposite direction, leaving Sansa helpless and victimized once more. Ramsay rips Sansa’s bridal gown apart, bends her over, and forces his way into her while she screams in agony. (This episode’s title is appropriately “Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken.”)

Theon Greyjoy is forced to watch while Sansa, who is barely 15 years old, loses her virginity to a sadist. The camera cuts away from the rape to focus on the ex-prince’s sorrow as he contorts his face. Sansa screams in despair as his tears fall. The screen then fades to black.
