Director and producer Jean-Marc Vallée, who won an Emmy for directing the hit HBO series “Big Little Lies” and whose 2013 drama “Dallas Buyers Club” earned multiple Oscar nominations, has died. He was 58.
Radio-Canada confirmed the news first reported by U.S. media outlets Sunday evening. According to Vallée’s son, Émile, the filmmaker died on Christmas night.
Why did Jean-Marc Vallée leave Big Little Lies?
Vallée entered television production in 2017 as executive producer of the HBO drama “Big Little Lies.”
He also directed the entire first season of the series, winning an Emmy before taking a break.
His reason? Vallee told The Hollywood Reporter after shooting the two murder mysteries, back to back: “I’m on a break, have been for a month, and I have seven more to go. I’m taking eight months to recharge my batteries and to get my life back.”
In a nutshell, he didn’t leave the Big Little Lies TV series. He only took a break from shooting films to ‘recharge his batteries and get his life back.’
