Alma Powell, the wife of former Secretary of State Colin Powell, has passed away at the age of 86, just a few years after her husband’s tragic death at the age of 84.
Alma, aside from being known as Colin’s wife, was an American audiologist. She was born on October 27, 1937, in Alabama and graduated from Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, before studying speech pathology and audiology at Emerson College in Boston.
Alma and Colin had been married for almost 60 years before her passing. She was also known as an advocate for children and youth, serving as the Chair of the Board of Directors for America’s Promise Alliance.
Alma is survived by her three children, Annemarie, Michael, and Linda. Her children described her as an exemplary role model and stated, “During childhoods marked by constant moving to new homes, we always felt secure, because home was wherever she stood.”
Colin Powell, a retired four-star general, American politician, and diplomat, served as the 65th United States Secretary of State from 2001 to 2005. His death was announced on Facebook by his family, revealing that he passed away due to complications from Covid-19. Powell was the first African-American man to hold the title of Secretary of State. Former President George W. Bush released a statement expressing his sadness at Powell’s passing, calling him a “great public servant.”
Colin and Alma Powell had three children together, Annemarie, Michael, and Linda. Annemarie is a producer, while Linda is known as an actress, with roles in shows like Chicago Fire and House of Cards.
Michael followed in his father’s footsteps and went into politics, serving as the former Republican chairman of the Federal Communications Commission.
