The first novel in George R. R. Martin’s epic fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire is A Game of Thrones. The initial edition’s release took place on August 1st, 1996. The novel was nominated for three World Fantasy Awards in 1997: the World Fantasy Award, the Nebula Award, and the Locus Award.

The 1997 Hugo Award for Best Novella went to Blood of the Dragon, which collected the Daenerys Targaryen chapters from the book. On the New York Times Bestsellers list in July 2011, the book debuted at the top spot.
