Ryan Crouser was born in Portland, Oregon, and was raised in Boring. He was born and raised in a family of throwers. His father, uncles, and cousins are all throwers.
His father is Mitch Crouser, who is the oldest of his brothers, Dean and Brian. His father is Larry Crouser, who set the Gresham High School record in the javelin (179 feet) in 1953.
Mitch was inspired by his father’s national championship javelin efforts while serving in the U.S. Army in the 1950s. According to him,
“I had a really good arm, but I didn’t know how to throw (properly). I had elbow problems and couldn’t throw in the state tournament my junior or senior years. It can be a nasty event if you don’t know how to do it.”
He completed his college years at the University of Idaho, where he specialized in the shot put and discus. He is best known for being a discus alternate on the 1984 USA Olympic team.
