Lorenzo Sonego is among the brightest tennis prospects to come out of Italy. The 2019 Antalya Open on grass and the 2021 Cagliari Open on clay were victories for the Italian veteran, who has already won two ATP titles.

Sonego, a native of Turin, played football in the Torino Football Club’s youth league up to the age of 13, at which point he decided to convert to tennis. Giorgio, Sonego’s father, urged him to get involved in sports and make a career out of them. Gipo Arbino, who is still his coach now, served as his leader.

Thanks to Cagliari’s victory, he became the first Italian player to win a championship on home soil since 2006, and he also reached his career-high rating of number 28. In both the French Open (2020) and Wimbledon (2021), he has made it to the fourth round. He hasn’t gone past the second round in either of his two matches so far at the Australian Open or the US Open.

Who is Lorenzo Sonego coach Gipo Arbino?

Gipo Arbino was an aspiring tennis player in the 1960s who had to give up the sport owing to financial constraints. He worked regularly for an organization that provided corrosion-reduction products. He tried instructing tennis and received positive feedback, which allowed him to change occupations and focus solely on teaching tennis.

After becoming friends in 2006 through a mutual friend, Gipo has been Lorenzo’s mentor ever since the boy was 11 years old. Lorenzo, who made his ATP debut as a professional in 2016 and won his maiden tournament in 2019, has been working with Arbino ever since. Arbino has also seen Lorenzo defeat Novak Djokovic, setting a new record for the Serbian’s fewest games won in a match.
