Otis Ray Redding Jr. was a singer and songwriter from the United States. Redding is a seminal artist in soul music and rhythm and blues, as well as a great singer in the history of American popular music.

Redding was born in Dawson, Georgia, and moved to Macon when he was two years old. Redding dropped out of school at the age of 15 to support his family by working with Little Richard’s backing band, the Upsetters, and performing in talent shows at Macon’s historic Douglass Theatre.
In 1958, Redding joined Johnny Jenkins’ band, the Pinetoppers, as a singer and driver, and toured the Southern states with them. An unplanned appearance at a Stax recording session resulted in a contract and his first hit single, “These Arms of Mine,” in 1962.
