After the 1989 season, Troy Aikman’s future didn’t appear too bright after going from the high of being selected first overall in the draft to what would likely be the hardest rookie season any NFL quarterback had ever experienced.

Jimmy Johnson, the Cowboys’ rookie coach, chose against fostering Aikman gradually and instead tosses him into the fire right away. In his first season as the starter, he struggled to an 0-11 record (155 of 293 for 1,749 yards, 9 TDs, and 18 INTs), and the Cowboys finished the season 1-15.
