At the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards, Coel became the first Black woman to win the Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series, Movie, or Dramatic Special for her work on the drama I May Destroy You. She was given birth on October 1, 1987.

In 2009, Coel joined the Talawa Theatre Company’s TYPT summer school program. As a Talawa student, Coel participated in the TYPT 2009 production of Krunch. The same year, Coel’s CD Fixing Barbie, which showcased her talents as a poet and musician, was published. Coel’s song “We’re the Losers” was released in that year.
