On October 19, 1927, William Joe “Red” McCombs, an American businessman, was born. McCombs was born in Spur, a small town in Dickens County in the US state of West Texas.

In order to launch Hemphill-McCombs Ford, the forerunner to the Red McCombs Automotive Group, McCombs and a colleague salesperson named Austin Hemphill moved to San Antonio in 1958. At Southwestern University and the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center of the University of Texas in Houston, McCombs served as chairman of the boards of trustees for both institutions.
