Edward James Olmos (born February 24, 1947) is an actor, director, producer, and activist from the United States. He is best known for his roles as Lieutenant Martin “Marty” Castillo in Miami Vice (1984-1989), American Me (1992) (for which he also directed), William Adama in the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica (2004-2009).

He also played the role of teacher Jaime Escalante in Stand and Deliver (1988) (for which he received an Academy Award nomination), Detective Gaff in Blade Runner (1982) and its sequel Blade Runner 2049 (2017), and Mito in the 2005 Disney du In the FX series Mayans MC, he played the father of two members of an outlaw motorcycle gang from 2018 until 2023.

The actor, whose career spans four decades, discussed how faith in God has been crucial in his own life amid difficult times.

“Just yesterday, we buried a friend of mine’s son — 29 years old. Then about a month ago, we buried my aunt [who] died of COVID. Over the last few months, we buried three of my first cousins [who] died of COVID. All in all, it could be really depressing to the point of not understanding the beauty of this life and continuing to share this life in a positive way,” Olmos revealed in his interview with CP.
