Billy Packer played basketball for the Demon Deacons from 1958 to 1962 when he was a student at Wake Forest.

Under the direction of head coach Bones McKinney, he assisted Wake in reaching the Final Four in 1962. Before beginning a career in broadcasting in 1972, he temporarily worked as an assistant coach at Wake Forest after graduation.

He briefly served as his alma mater’s assistant coach after graduating. In Raleigh, North Carolina, Packer started his broadcasting career in 1972 after being asked to step in as the colour analyst for an ACC game that was being aired locally. The next season, Packer was a regular.
