The Ghana Union of Traders’ Association (GUTA) is calling on the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to provide transparency regarding the current erratic power supply in the country.

In a statement released by the Association’s Communications Director, Joseph Obeng, GUTA emphasized the need for ECG to communicate the causes of the ongoing load shedding, commonly known as dumsor, to its members.

GUTA is requesting ECG to not only disclose the steps being taken to address the situation but also to provide a detailed timeline for resolving the issue. The Association stressed the importance of having a clear load-shedding schedule to assist businesses in effectively planning their operations.

The adverse effects of dumsor on the economy were highlighted by GUTA, noting a significant impact on productivity across various sectors.

Despite calls from Civil Society Organisations and the Public Utility Regulatory Commission, ECG has failed to provide a load-shedding timetable, further complicating the challenges faced by businesses.

The inconsistent power supply has posed significant hurdles for manufacturers, leading to disruptions in production schedules and increased operational costs due to the reliance on generators during outages.

GUTA expressed the overwhelming negative impact of dumsor on the economy, affecting productivity in agriculture, trade, and industry.

Business owners in various sectors, including traders, wholesalers, tailors, electricians, and artisans, are facing setbacks as a result of the erratic power supply, creating an unbearable situation for businesses in the country.

The statement from GUTA underscored the urgent need for ECG to address the dumsor phenomenon and provide a sustainable solution to avoid further economic repercussions.
