Give us ‘dumsor’ timetable to plan our business – GUTA

The Ghana Union of Traders’ Association (GUTA) has added its voice to the growing calls for the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to release a load-shedding timetable to help businesses plan effectively.

In a statement, GUTA expressed concern over the negative impact of the current erratic power supply, known locally as “dumsor”, on the economy. The association highlighted how dumsor was affecting productivity in various sectors, including agriculture, trade, and industry.

The lack of a consistent power supply has made it challenging for manufacturers to maintain production schedules and plan for their workers. This inconsistency in power supply not only adds to production costs but also worsens living conditions for many people.

GUTA also raised issues with the high cost of doing business as a result of the unreliable power supply. Business owners are forced to rely on generators and stock up on fuel to keep their operations running during power outages.

The association emphasized that the current situation was creating unbearable conditions for businesses across the country, including traders, shop owners, wholesalers, tailors, dressmakers, electricians, and artisans.

GUTA’s call for ECG to release a load-shedding timetable comes amidst similar demands from other stakeholders, including Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and the Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC). Despite these calls, ECG has yet to provide a clear schedule for managing the power supply.
