According to Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Minority Leader in Parliament, members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) would use private member’s legislation to advocate for the elimination of specific annoyance levies.
This comes after Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia promised to remove several taxes imposed by the current administration, including the emissions tax, the electronic transactions fee, and the projected 15% value-added tax on power.
Dr. Forson asserts that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs will back the private member’s bill if Dr. Bawumia is sincere about his objectives when it is brought to the Parliamentary floor.
On February 13, he made the case on JoyNews’ PM Express that the majority’s stance on the issue will demonstrate the veracity of the NPP flagbearer’s honesty.
“We will try to get the government to eliminate all the levies that we have opposed.”
“We’ve previously stated on the floor that the Vice President is merely repeating what the NDC is saying, especially now that he has personally confirmed to us that they oppose the taxes.”
“The hansard will support what I said on the floor: the next NDC government will eliminate these levies. This is what I have said. He said to host Evans Mensah, “I am the first person.”
The minority leader responded, “Why should we wait? ” when asked why he would not wait for the next NDC to eliminate these taxes. Ghanaians are having difficulty.
“Your good self, my good self, and the average Ghanaian are paying this tax because it is the only reason it is still in effect and the NDC is not in power.”
