We’ll make an impact in Manhyia South constituency – Elikem Kotoko

The Manhyia Constituency in Ghana, known as a stronghold of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), may see a shift in power during the upcoming parliamentary elections in December, according to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Deputy National Organiser of the NDC, Elikem Kotoko, expressed optimism about the party’s chances in the constituency, citing a decrease in confidence in the NPP among young voters. He highlighted that the incumbent, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, won the previous election with a significantly lower margin, indicating a waning trust in the ruling party.

The recent defeat of Nana Owusu Prempeh, a brother of the outgoing MP, by private legal practitioner Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah in the NPP’s parliamentary primary, further underlined the potential shifting dynamics in the constituency. Mr. Awuah garnered 376 votes compared to Nana Owusu Prempeh’s 141 votes.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Election Brief, Kotoko noted that the loss of Nana Owusu Prempeh in the primary was not surprising, as it signaled a desire for change among constituents. This development was seen as a positive sign for the NDC’s electoral prospects in Manhyia.

Kotoko emphasized that the NDC was prepared to address the concerns of the constituents and believed that the party could capture political power in the constituency. He pointed out that in the 2020 election, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh of the NPP received 27,985 votes, while the NDC’s Abubakar Sulemana polled 5,047 votes.

The Deputy National Organiser highlighted the party’s readiness to make a significant impact in Manhyia South and other areas traditionally considered strongholds of the NPP. As the election draws near, all eyes will be on the evolving political landscape in the Manhyia Constituency and the potential for a change in representation.
