The strongest assurances have been made by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo that the government will make every effort to guarantee that the Electoral Commission (EC) holds a legitimate and equitable election in December.
In addition, Akufo-Addo stressed that the government will make sure that public education about the importance of a peaceful election is hammered home to every corner of the nation during his penultimate State of the Nation address on Tuesday, February 27.
“As it is an election year, the volume of all communications has been increased to a level where even those who are the least interested in politics will be aware that on December 7 we will be heading to the polls to choose a new president and members of Parliament.”
The President underlined the importance of the Electoral Commission’s role in conducting credible elections and the necessity of all parties’ working together to ensure success.
He urged political parties to protect the democratic system’s integrity and to see competitive elections as chances for development rather than conflict.
“The Electoral Commission bears a great deal of responsibility for establishing the institution that will guarantee the credibility of our elections. The government is contributing to the smooth operation of the Electoral Commission.
“Political parties bear a great deal of responsibility as well, and I hope they understand that some people want to weaken the multiparty democratic system of governance and that their credibility is also at stake.
“It is incumbent upon the parties to prove that contests for office are honorable, character-building events and that, at the conclusion of the process, the defeated party will extend congratulations to the victor, and the world does not end because an election has been lost.”
