Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has voiced his support for head coach Otto Addo’s decision to leave out Andre Ayew from the Black Stars squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Gyan acknowledged Ayew’s immense contributions to the national team over the years but emphasized the importance of moving on and evolving the squad.
“Andre has done so much for Ghana. He started way back in 2007 and he has been consistent in the national team. He is the most capped player,” Gyan stated in an interview with Joy Sports.
Ayew’s exclusion from the squad has sparked mixed reactions among fans and pundits. However, Gyan firmly believes that the coach’s decision is in the best interest of the team’s progress.
The decision to drop Ayew comes after he was included in the squad for matches against Nigeria and Uganda in March. Many were surprised by the omission, especially considering Ayew’s notable season in France where he scored five goals in 13 starts for Le Havre.
Despite his impressive performances at the club level, Ayew will not be featuring in the upcoming qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic. Gyan’s endorsement of the coach’s decision reflects the need for change and new opportunities for emerging talent within the national team.
