UK heatwave: Lutton Airport shuts down

The extreme heat conditions prevailing in the UK currently is causing a myriad of problems.

Lutton Airport is the latest casualty of the heat phenomenon. Authorities had to shut down the airport due to the damaging effect of the heatwave on the landing surfaces.

Wales has already had its hottest day on record, with 37.1C Hawarden breaking the previous record by nearly 2 degrees.

Temperatures could reach 43 degrees Celsius tomorrow, the highest ever recorded, resulting in ‘thousands’ of deaths and the country’s first-ever Red Extreme Heat warning.

Today’s temperature in London was 37.5°C (99.5°F), while in Aboyne, Aberdeenshire, and Leuchars, Fife, it reached 31.3°C.

National Grid has issued an alert requesting additional power plants for tonight, predicting extremely high demand.

After weeks of extremely dry conditions, wildfires raged on today, including in fields near Chesterfield in Derbyshire and Lickey Hills Country Park in Birmingham.

London Ambulance said it expected up to 8,000 calls by the end of the day, with the worst still to come.
