Students from the University for Development Studies in Tamale, who completed their education programmes between 2021 and 2022, are demanding the removal of the university’s Director of Information Technology, Dr Abdul Wahid Mohammed, and other officials due to delays in their graduation and issuance of certificates.
The group, called ‘Concerned Students of the Sandwich Colleges of Education,’ consists of students from five Colleges of Education, including Tumu College of Education, Gambaga College of Education, Saint Vincent College of Education, Dambai College of Education, McCoy College of Education, and Al-Faruq College of Education.
At a press conference in Walewale, spokesperson Christy Avuyem expressed the group’s frustration over not receiving their certificates, causing distress among their families. The delay has led to concerns about wasted money and academic progress.
The students criticized the university for the prolonged certification process, which they claim has hindered their personal and professional growth. They highlighted the discrepancy in certificate issuance time compared to other universities and gave a one-week ultimatum to the UDS to release their certificates.
Furthermore, the students called for the dismissal or resignation of Dr Abdul Wahid Mohammed and other officials for their perceived negligence and lack of professionalism. They urged the National Accreditation Board and Ministry of Education to intervene for a resolution.
The students warned of radical actions if their demands were not met and emphasized the importance of prompt certificate issuance for their academic and career advancement.
This situation has raised concerns about the efficiency and quality of education delivery at the University for Development Studies.
