Tyler Skaggs texted the communications director for the Angels, Eric Kay, on June 30, 2019. He was asking Kay for painkillers.
However, that same evening, he did not answer his wife Carli’s good night text. She usually sent them whenever he was on the road. The following day he was found unresponsive in his hotel room in Southlake, Texas.
He was pronounced dead at around 2:18 pm, upon the arrival of authorities at the scene. A number of pills were discovered in Skaggs’s hotel room, including a 30 mg oxycodone pill, additional 5 mg oxycodone pills, several anti-inflammatories, and white powder on the floor.

After an autopsy by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner on August 30, 2019, it was revealed that there was a mix of fentanyl, oxycodone, and alcohol in Skaggs’s system. In addition, he had a blood-alcohol level of 0.12.
The examination concluded that Skaggs had died of asphyxia after aspirating on his own vomit, and his death was ruled an accident.
