Following a fire that destroyed at least eight container shops in Obuasi, Ashanti Region, and a 10-bedroom house in Edwenase, Kwadaso Municipality, in the last 48 hours, authorities are looking into a possible arson attack.

On Sunday, February 25, 2024, at around noon, a fire broke out at Edwenase, bringing down the story building and damaging nearby properties.

A serious manhunt has been started for the facility’s lone occupant, according to Assemblyman for the Area Emmanuel Agyei Darko, who confirmed the incident to Asaase News.

Ten or so bedrooms have burned down. The building is still under construction and does not have electricity. The building’s caretakers report that they saw a naked flame inside the residence and believe the occupant to be the one whose tenancy has ended. They have now gone to the police to report the incident, Darko stated.

“One individual has now been placed under guard by the caregivers following an assault on them. In order to support investigations, he was sent to the police station, he continued.

On Monday, February 26, 2024, at Black Park, a well-known trading hub in the Obuasi Municipality, there was another fire incident that resulted in the destruction of at least eight containers and their contents.

After battling the fire for several hours, a combined team from the AGA Fire Station and the Ghana National Fire Service declared the situation under control.

Shortly after the firefighters left, the victims were tallying their losses. Among other things, flammable materials and plastics were destroyed.

Isaac Gyan, forty, is devastated by the loss.
“After receiving a call from a coworker regarding the incident, I hurried to the scene only to discover my belongings on fire. The firefighters performed admirably. The situation was saved by their prompt intervention. He declared, “It would have been a disaster.”

This occurs as the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) intensifies fire safety education in the area in an effort to reduce these kinds of incidents.

“It is imperative that residents take safety precautions by unplugging and turning off their appliances.” Thus, DO3 Peter Adai, a spokesman for the Ghana National Fire Service in the Ashanti Region, said, “We want to urge the public that they should take our intensified education seriously, especially now that we are experiencing these outages.”
