Gulsen, a Turkish pop star has been arrested on charges of “inciting hatred and enmity” with a joke she made about Turkey’s religious schools.
The 46-year-old singer was arrested in her home in Istanbul for questioning by police officials. She is in prison now facing a pending trial.
According to sources, the charges were based on a joke the pop singer had made during her April concert in Istanbul.
Gulsen was previously a target in the Islamic circle mostly for her indecent and revealing outfits on stage. She also raised the LGBTQ flag at a concert.
The singer has apologized for the offensive joke and had said, her comments were seized on by those wanting to deepen polarization in the country.
Gulsen had rejected all accusations that incited hatred and enmity during her questioning by court authorities.
Her request to be released from custody pending the outcome of a trial was rejected. Fans have taken to social media to ask for the release.
