The Ashaiman Circuit Court has ordered 51-year-old “trotro” driver Michael Oppong into police detention after he stabbed a passenger with a knife over a fifty pesewas lorry fare charge.

After receiving treatment for his injuries, the victim, Ketogloh Mawunyegah Edoh, was released from the hospital to await additional care.

Oppong, who was accused of harming others, did not enter a plea and was remanded by the Simon Gaga-led court to appear again on March 25, 2024.

The victim will undergo surgery to determine the extent of the injuries he sustained, and the court will also wait to remove an object that the medical professionals determined was in the area where the victim was stabbed.

The victim’s wife, Dziedzorm Edoh, filed a complaint in the case, according to police chief inspector Joyce Nyarko, the prosecutor. She stated that the victim got out of Oppong’s car at Adjei-Kojo and got out at Global, a suburb in the Tema West Municipality, on February 5, 2024, at around 2030 hours.

The prosecution claims that the victim and the accused got into an argument about a 50 pesewas balance, which the accused wanted back from the victim after the victim volunteered to pay Gh₵ 4.50 pesewas rather than five cedis.

According to Chief Inspector Nyarko, during their argument, Oppong stabbed the victim in the back with a knife he had taken from under the carpet beneath his feet on the driver’s side of the car.

According to her, a few bystanders helped to disarm the accused of the knife and hurried the sufferer to the New Crystal Hospital for medical attention.

The complainant, who lived a short distance from the incident, was notified by someone, according to the prosecution, and they together turned over the accused to the Kanewu Police station, where a report was filed.

According to Madam Nyarko, Oppong was taken into custody again and the knife was kept as evidence. Meanwhile, police visited the hospital where the victim was admitted and attended to her needs.
